You will be surprised to know the historical origins of this event. The GFD has its roots in the division of the Soviet Union into several constituent states, most notably modern Russia. This division ended the Cold War and became an important yardstick in the fight for world peace.

In 1997, the United Nations General Assembly launched the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. International Day of Families, originally called One Day for Peace, was first celebrated on January 1, 2000, to remember the achievement of world peace. All of these efforts revolved around the belief that we could one day achieve complete world peace. As a result, One Day for Peace was observed as the International Day of Families from January 1, 2001.
