Every fall, the same scenario takes place: Buffalo Trace announces Rip van Winkle’s old squad–aka Pappy — is being rolled out in stores, and whiskey lovers are feeling a twinge of excitement as they imagine they’ll actually find a bottle this year. After all, a limited or customized version of whiskey is hard to come by.
Unfortunately, for most of us, that won’t be the case. There are not many of them. Or, if you happen to come across a bottle in the wild, it will be priced well above Buffalo Trace’s SRP—usually thousands of dollars.
But isn’t Babi kind of old? Sure, it’s good whiskey, but it’s also yesterday’s news. There are plenty of whiskeys out there that are absolutely equal when it comes to flavor and influence. Will it be easier to find? This is hope. But since whiskey is so hot right now, it’s impossible to predict which bottles will be plucked faster.
Be in the know, keep your wallet ready, and good luck!

Wild Turkey Distillery’s other brand, Russell’s Reserve, is one of the year’s best bourbon buys. But the new line extension comes at a higher price with a more exclusive selling point: It pulls from barrels that have matured in specific warehouses, highlighting the differences that arise from the distillery’s diverse maturation environments. The first bottling comes from Camp Nelson Warehouse C, which were legendary for barrels of honey. The warehouse was shut down in 2021, making this expression the last chance to sip some very special bourbon.
