To make the setup fully operable, the Marietta went through six different radiator fan units, custom designed dual oil and overflow coolant tanks, installed a dual tank brake master cylinder, and replaced on an independent rear suspension setup that the Shelby was fiddling with but shelved. to increase production costs. The independent rear suspension also allows for four-wheel disc brakes to replace the original rear drums. Much more than just another white Wimbledon Mustang with Guardsman Blue racing stripes, the rolling cage and bucket seats hint at the competition model’s performance potential, as is the front end that Brock himself designed to improve the air-cooling and brakes of the 1960s.

I climb and tighten the five-point belt. After eight years of hard service, the fearsome V8 comes to life with a single ignition crank and a quick throttle pump. Despite the inevitable antique look, plenty of low-end V8 torque drives the Mustang straight while I let the clutch slowly let out. I let the oil temperatures creep in before putting the line back in.
But the car has proven quite accessible, even for amateur enthusiasts, with a tough suspension that nonetheless smooths out the roughest streets and jumps only over the biggest bumps and potholes. It took a while to adjust to the fine-tuned steering wheel, smooth transmission, and firm brakes. On public roads, Marietta urged me to push the car harder, calling the drivetrain “unbreakable,” and I’m doing my best. Thanks to all the coolant tests, the coolant temperature never rises above 195 degrees.
Opening up to only three-quarters of the throttle, the deep V8 transitions into a rattling screeching sound as we approach the red line. I hope Marietta knows the local cops. If they don’t see us go over traffic well above the stated speed limits, they will definitely listen to us at close range. Then, after the episode back to the OVC store, Marietta insisted he drive for a quick session too, if just to totally amaze me.
