During her Video Vanguard Award acceptance speech, the 39-year-old rapper said she wishes “Jackson and Whitney Houston we are here”.
“I hope people understand what they’ve been through,” she added. “I wish people would take Psychological health Seriously, even for people you think have a perfect life.”
Minaj received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the ceremony, which “is given to artists for their outstanding contributions and profound impact on music video and popular culture,” according to MTV.
According to multiple reports, when Jackson was alive, doctors speculated that he had body dysmorphic disorder.
Jackson died at age 50 after suffering cardiac arrest caused by a fatal combination of medications given to him by his personal physician, while Whitney Houston died at age 48 from accidental drowning, with heart disease and cocaine use cited as contributing factors.
In the rest of her talk, Minaj also praised the people who gave her tremendous opportunities. She credited Kanye West, Beyoncé, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Eminem, Britney Spears, and Rihanna.
Taylor Swift can be seen cheering on Minaj, asking the people around her to stand up during the rapper’s speech.
Swift was also seen hovering over Minaj By singing all the lyrics to her “Super Bass” single performed live by the MC at Prudential Stadium in New Jersey.
Minaj joins the likes of Madonna, Janet Jackson, LL Cool J, Jennifer Lopez and Missy Elliott as a Video Vanguard Award winner.
