When you hear Nike’s latest game-changing innovation comes in the form of a gray jacket, it might not seem like the biggest leap forward. But the brand thinks the technology — pioneered by Nike Forward — behind the hoodie is a pretty big deal.
“We believe this platform has the potential to reset the way we think about materials and apparel,” says Aaron Heizer, Vice President of Global Apparel Product Marketing.
Nike Forward moves the needle into sustainability
according to nike Athletes around the world have said that climate change is a barrier to sport. Part of the company’s response Nike Forward, a new type of material manufacturing. Instead of a multi-stage process that involves spinning spinning, knitting, cutting, sewing, and the like, Nike uses needle-punched machines to convert the fibers directly into fabric. Fewer production steps mean less energy is used. On average, there is a 75 percent reduction in the carbon footprint of this new material versus traditional knitted wool. In addition, the material is also less dense.
“Nike Forward feels different because it is different,” says Carmen Zollman, VP Innovation Apparel Design, Nike, Inc.
Hood is made with 70 percent recycled content by weight. It does not contain dyes or decorations and its production does not use any water. To make them more recyclable, first-in-line products don’t have zippers, extra edges, or threads (small wrappers on the ends of laces and laces).
