Now that we’ve finished with the architecture plans, it’s time to focus on the finishes! Here’s the inspiration we’re using for our modern coastal farmhouse palette in our new home.
Modern + coastal + rural house
You probably wouldn’t be surprised by the title of this post or the design direction we’re going for the renovation. (More about Renewal plans here.)
When I’m ripping pages from a magazine or browsing Pinterest, I’m drawn to coastal and farmhouse decor.
coastal For an easy-breezy white backdrop paired with cool muted blues and greens mixed with natural elements.
country house The color palette is classic black and white with elements of rustic texture scattered throughout. (More on the farm here!)
accident Because I also like a clean and tidy new feeling, like the old dark house I grew up in 🙂
I really like a neutral background With pops of color that I can change seasonally and/or when I get sick of them.
I want our house to feel classic and spa.
Fortunately, Thomas and I have the same style, and it fits perfectly! (You can see this in Renovating our porch A few years ago.)
When we share pictures of our likes and dislikes, we’re always on the same page. (And we don’t always agree on everything in life, especially as two hardcore people!)

White walls (yes!)
Some call it boring or cold, but I call it clean! I actually heard a woman at the salon say “I could never paint my entire house white”. I laughed because that’s my goal!
Our entire house is gray at the moment – the outside and all 3 floors of walls. I love gray (or the keyword is color Acceptable gray by Sherwin Williams) And I love it, but if we’re going to start over, I want everything to be white. It is known that I paint a wall with colors (Like my first home) and then repaint white!
white trim
This is a no brainer for me 🙂
black windows
Getting new windows is a big priority for Thomas (along with making the house more airtight in general). For this Renault, I was talking about storage, space and all he can focus on are windows, soundproofing and quality! As a custom builder he looks beyond finishes. While we get better windows and insulation, we’re going black!
black hardware
Brushed gold is very trendy (see first photo in the gallery below!) but I’m afraid it will date quickly, so we’re planning on going with classic black.
Hardwoods are natural wood
The floors in our house are dark brown mixed with orange. I don’t hate them, but Thomas wants natural hardwood. Since we move out and have to stain the floors in the addition, we’ll do the entire first floor while we’re at it rather than trying to match a color we don’t like.
Interior white cabinets
I’m learning a lot about homes! The inner cabinets contain the drawers that go into the compartment verses the overlay of the cabinets having fronts close to the base. (Learn more here!) Almost all of my inspiration images are internally appended, so that’s what we’re hoping to get. We might mix in some color for the island, but I’m so color-phobic in the long run that we’ll most likely do white for the kitchen surround.
Marble quartz counters
when i did Kitchen counters in my old house I’ve done enough research on the materials to know that quartz is the only way to go. It’s the most durable, and I can’t bear the thought of a blemish or stain at the counter time. I’ve hated the granite counters in our current kitchen since I moved in, but I’ve never wanted to rip out something new. Now that they’re seven, I can’t wait to get something more out of my style. (Not the sparkles I put on 2013 – haha).
white tile backsplash
This is a decision we’ve been deliberating. I hate being boring with white subway tiles again. But when I look at all the kitchens that catch my eye on Pinterest, they all have splashes of white background! We might try to get a little creative with the size of the tiles or perhaps the installation style, but my eyes just love organizing the horizontal rectangles. TBD if we go with white or charcoal grout! This is another huge debate. We want white, but our guts say darker!
The bright paint color on the island is coastal blue/green
Are you surprised by a splash of color!? I think the island is a great place to do this, and a lot of my pins have blue islands.
