The Talking series is a weekly segment that delves into the topics that guests discuss at Men’s Daily Warrior Podcast.
You probably don’t know who Mary Ann Evans is, but we guarantee you know her famous term, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
The metaphor, written in 1860 under the pseudonym George Eliot, cautions against assessing value based on appearance. The tattoo is a great example.
In the early twentieth century, the public viewed those with tattoos as criminals and delinquents. Since then, tattoos have gone from the fringes of society into a $3 billion a year industry. Like many with heavy tattoos, actor Dave Bautista (Sand dunes , Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy) and John Coral knows very well that people still rule. open friends DC . community ink Together, a high-end tattoo studio in Tampa, Florida, was a dream project for the two of them.
Although they are both doing well now, this was not always the case. Before he became a famous wrestler and Hollywood A-lister, Dave was just a kid growing up in a gritty neighborhood of Washington, D.C. watching the mob take a deadly beating. Murder was common. John couldn’t have had easier growing up in Puerto Rico, where neighborhoods were plagued by poverty, unemployment, and crime.
We had the pleasure of meeting with Bautista and Kural at the DC Society Ink in downtown Tampa to record an episode of Men’s Daily Warrior Podcast. We’ve got some of the best life advice from Bautista. Here are the actor’s top tips on achieving your dreams.
1. Don’t chase money
Want to be successful? Then don’t make money your top priority. It may seem counterintuitive, but chasing money only distracts you from what’s really important – which is work. It’s easy to assume that WWE superstar Bautista was motivated by the physical trappings of fame, but nothing could be further from the truth. Not being preoccupied with his salary allowed him to focus excessively on honing his craft, which led to his success. Try to think of “…money [as] As a byproduct of going after what you’re passionate about,” he says. Whether your passion is playing guitar, painting cityscapes, or body-beating opponents, Dave believes “money [should] It will never be the goal. “
2. Find mentors
In a 1675 letter to Robert Hooke, Sir Isaac Newton humbly wrote, “If I see more, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” Unless this is your introduction to Everyday Warrior, you know how powerful we are in recognizing this quote. However, when we hear names like Ric Flair and Triple H, we think of the legendary wrestlers and we can’t help but get excited to witness their iconic moments in the ring. Bautista considers them mentors and is forever grateful that they invested the time in helping him grow on a personal and professional level. “I wouldn’t get to where I am [am] If not for them…I owe them my career,” says Bautista. “Especially Triple H… he mentored me and made me a star.” No matter what your profession, mentors are important to success. Find someone with a career You want to emulate it and learn all you can from it.Standing on their shoulders will allow you to see a whole world you didn’t know existed before.
3. Take chances
It’s no secret we all have dreams. What separates those who keep dreaming and those who wake up and turn their dreams into reality? The answer is simple: take a risk. That’s because opportunities only come to those who are willing to put everything on the line. Dave was 30 years old when he decided to take a shot at pro wrestling. At that age, failure was not a possibility but a possibility. This does not matter. Dave knew that his leadership and work ethic made it less of a gamble and more of a calculated risk. After becoming a world champion, he again risked everything to chase his dream of acting. The WWE superstar struggled to find work for three years before finally landing his amazing role Guardians of the Galaxy. “I ended up locking up my house; I wasn’t making money,” he says.
However, he believed in himself enough to stay focused and push forward. Risking it all is scary but much less than living with regret for not taking the shot.
Those who have the courage to risk everything quickly learn that you can never truly dream. That’s because once you catch it, something incredible happens – it changes. Dreams are also more difficult to achieve than they seem. When someone succeeds, all we see is the fruit of their labor, but not the hard work and sacrifices they put in to get them there.
Bautista and Kural make the sacrifices necessary for the success of the DC Society Ink. Incredibly, two men so closely related to chasing dreams have come together about an art form that helps people honor their past and celebrate their future. In this way, the tattoo is so much more than just inked skin – it’s a visual representation of the dreams we’ve discovered and the ones we’re still chasing.
